150 years ago, Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" introduced the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection. Over the last several decades, this has been applied to economics, society, ethics, politics and religion. Wyoming Signatures' Jeff Lockwood explores these ideas with one of the leading scholars in the field of Sociobiology, Richard Machalek. Using traditional sociological theories, Machalek studies ants, and other non-human societies. His research is used to offer insight into complex social behaviors and structures. Richard Machalek received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975. His major areas of teaching and research interests include evolution of social behavior, new religious movements, non-traditional religious behavior, and the social influences on religious conversion. Richard Machalek is a professor of Sociology at the University of Wyoming. He has received the University of Wyoming's highest award for excellence in teaching. Jeff Lockwood is a professor of Natural Sciences & Humanities at the University of Wyoming and teaches creative writing and philosophy. Filmed by University of Wyoming Television, December 2010. Aired on Wyoming Signatures on Wyoming Public Television. Producer: Mary Jung; Director: Ali Grossman; Cameras: Cameron Patey and Steve Costin; Audio: Norm Mabbitt
